Hoping you get some ideas from all you smart people..
I set up the LAN for a small business a friend of mine is involved in, and they needed a remote access solution for off-site access to some files on the server.. So, I picked them up a Linksys RV016, turned on IPsec, added a bunch of users to the VPN access list, and turned it on.
It works, i.e. I'm able to connect to the VPN remotely using Windows XP's out-of-the-box client (wierd.. i didn't realize it was a dial-up esque thing), map network drives, etc, to the shared server.. but opening files is just. too. slow. There's basically this big word document they need to open (1 meg large or so) which takes about 25 seconds to load. My client is finding that unacceptable.
Also, browsing the directory tree with explorer is very slow.. and they're NOT huge folders, maybe 5-20 items max..
What are some strategies I can employ to increase the access speed or find the bottleneck? I've read about increasing the MTU size, is that where I should start?
