Do I have to carry my passport everywhere with me in Russia for police inspections?

Will be in Russia for a month in March.

I read that the police like to check your passport and you need to have them on hand when asked or face fines etc. Then heard another report that you should never show your passport to the Russian police?!?!

Any other tips?
