What is the French view on sex? How true is the reputation or stereotype of promiscuity?

What I meant by reputation is that they're very liberal when it comes to their views on sex. I'm not French - so please explain to me. Is it that they view sex to be less symbolic in terms of marriage? Do they view sex more-the-less an enjoyable activity equally for both men and women? Is there similarities between them and the Italian or Spanish in their view on sex?
