How do I tell my parents that I lost my camera?

I lost it a long long time ago, so there is no hope in finding it. I never told them because I was worried they would get mad, and just kept putting off telling them.
As christmas is coming up, my mum keeps asking me what I want, and I would really like a new camera as I have missed it so much, but that would mean I have to tell them, how should I do it, or is there an alternative? Thank you!
